Bathroom Renovations Canberra

We renovate bathrooms for Canberra homeowners. Apex Bathrooms ACT has been doing it since 2008: one team, the owner running the job, and a compliance certificate at handover.

We have completed more than 800 bathroom renovations across the ACT and Queanbeyan. We hold NSW contractor licence 309929C and public liability insurance to $20 million. Every job comes with a 10-year warranty on our workmanship, waterproofing included.

A full bathroom renovation

As a bathroom ages it starts to cost you money. Outdated plumbing leads to leaks and, eventually, to structural repairs. Old fixtures push up water use and your bills. Worn surfaces hold mould and mildew, which is a health problem as well as a looks problem. And an older bathroom has none of the safety features a current one does.

A full renovation deals with all of it at once. We strip the room back, prepare and moisture-test the substrate, waterproof it, tile it, and fit the plumbing, electrical and fixtures. We can recreate an existing ensuite, or build and retile a bathroom, powder room or separate toilet from scratch. If you want the scope set out line by line before you talk to anyone, read what a renovation includes and what it does not.

It runs in three stages: a free measure and a written, itemised quote, then design and planning, then the build. It ends with a handover pack that puts the waterproofing compliance certificate in your hands. Each stage is set out under How the job runs, below.

Design your bathroom in 3D

Set the room size, pick tiles and fixtures, send it to us.

The design tool above is ours. You choose a layout, then pick the vanity, shower, bath, toilet, tiles and tapware from the designer's catalogue, and the room builds itself in 3D as you go. There is no price on screen - it is a design tool, not a calculator, and the quote comes from us in writing.

When you are happy with it, send it. We receive the design, the product list and screenshots of the room you built, and a copy comes back to you by email, so the first conversation starts from something real instead of a blank page. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.

Every quote follows a site inspection - what is behind the wall settles part of the price. For ranges, and for what actually drives them, read our guide to bathroom renovation costs and what moves them.

How the job runs

First a free measure and quote. We look at the bathroom you have, listen to what you want from it, inspect the substrate condition where we can, and give you a written, itemised quote - no ballpark figures.

Then design and planning, once you are happy with the quote: fixtures, tiles, finishes, and the order the trades come in.

Then the work. Demolition and substrate preparation, waterproofing to AS3740:2021 with the cure times the standard requires, tiling, then fixtures, fit-out and a thorough clean-up. A standard bathroom runs two to four weeks; four to six if plumbing moves or joinery is made to order. Our guide to how a renovation runs, week by week sets out each stage and what can stretch it.

You get a handover pack at the end: the waterproofing compliance certificate, the paperwork for our 10-year workmanship warranty, waterproofing included, product warranties for the fixtures, and care instructions for the tiles, grout and silicone.

Queanbeyan is over the border in New South Wales, which puts it under a different set of building rules to the ACT. We work on both sides. Our base is A/28 Lyell St, Fyshwick ACT 2609.

Frequently asked questions

Do you renovate ensuites and small bathrooms?
Yes. Ensuites and small original bathrooms are most of what we are asked for here, and small is a design problem rather than a defect. Our small bathrooms and ensuites page sets out how we approach them.
Do I need approval to renovate a bathroom in the ACT?
Most standard renovations need no approval: internal work that changes nothing structural is exempt development under the Planning (Exempt Development) Regulation 2023. Structural changes - a load-bearing wall, the roofline, the footprint of the house - may need approval from the Territory Planning Authority, and so can work on a heritage-listed home. There are no local councils in the ACT. All the work must meet the National Construction Code and AS3740:2021.
Can I stay in the house while you work?
Yes, if you have a second bathroom. With only one, plan to make other arrangements for about two weeks, from demolition until the new fixtures work. We set the schedule to suit you and keep the site clean.
Do you handle the plumbing and electrical, or do I book those?
We handle them. Plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tiling and the fit-off sit in one itemised quote and one program, and Oleg schedules the trades, so you are not chasing anyone. A licensed waterproofer inspects the membrane and issues the compliance certificate before any tiling starts.
What warranty comes with the work?
Every job comes with a 10-year warranty on our workmanship, waterproofing included. The warranty paperwork is in your handover pack, with the product warranties for the fixtures.
