Tiling Services Canberra

We tile for Canberra homeowners and businesses: bathrooms, floors, walls, kitchens and laundries. Retiling lifts a tired room without a full renovation, and every job is quoted and itemised before we start.

New tiling is the cheapest way to change how a room looks and how long it lasts. It adds value to the house without the cost and disruption of taking the whole room apart. Apex Bathrooms ACT has been tiling here since 2008, in houses and in commercial buildings, and has completed more than 800 bathroom renovations across Canberra and Queanbeyan in that time. We hold NSW contractor licence 309929C and public liability insurance to $20 million, the business is family-owned, and the owner runs each job from the first consultation through to the final clean-up.

Bathroom tiling

Retiling a bathroom upgrades it without demolishing it, which is why this is the most common job we are called for. In the small original bathrooms of the ex-government houses through Belconnen and Tuggeranong it is often the alternative to renovating the whole room: the layout still works and it is the surfaces that have had enough. We work in ceramic, porcelain, natural stone and mosaic. Ceramic and porcelain are the usual answer: water-resistant, hard-wearing and easy to live with.

Tile size changes the room more than colour does. Smaller tiles read modern and busy; larger tiles, with fewer grout lines, make a small bathroom look bigger. Pick a size in proportion to the room. In a wet area the waterproofing under the tiles has to be sorted first - see waterproofing to AS3740:2021 - because nothing on top of a failed membrane will save it.

Floor tiling

Floors wear out. When the damage is past repair, replacing the floor is the only real option, and tiling is the efficient way to do it. Granite, ceramic and porcelain are the three toughest tiles for heavy foot traffic, at home or in a business.

The substrate decides the result. Most Canberra houses are slab-on-ground, so the floor under old tiles is usually concrete - it gets moisture-tested and sealed before anything is laid over it. The surface also has to be clean, level and free of debris, and bumps and holes get filled. Choosing suitable materials and the right contractor are the two things that decide whether a floor tiling job goes well. Our guide to floor tiling - costs, mistakes and when tiles need replacing has the full checklist, including what to have ready before the tiler arrives.

Wall tiling

Wall tiling is the answer when a wall needs repair, looks tired, or lives in a high-moisture room - a bathroom, a kitchen, a laundry. Tiled walls are easy to clean, resistant to water damage and long-lasting.

Choosing non-porous tiles is essential on a wall. Ceramic is popular and cost-effective; porcelain, marble, granite or travertine give a more expensive-looking finish. The adhesive and the grout are both matched to the tile, and our tiles and materials guide sets out how. Before anything goes on, old tiles come off properly and we check for plumbing or electrical hidden behind them. That last step is the main reason wall tiling is a poor DIY job.

Kitchen tiling

Kitchens get tiled either because you are building a new one or because the old tiling has had enough - scratches, chips, damage, or a colour that dates the room. A tiled kitchen protects the walls from water damage and staining around the sink, the stove and the dishwasher.

We tile kitchen floors and walls and install splashbacks, including the grouting and any waterproofing the job needs. Materials run from ceramics and mosaics through porcelain to natural stone. Engineered stone is not among them: its supply and installation have been prohibited in Australia since 1 July 2024. Where a benchtop is part of the job, what goes in is natural stone, porcelain slab, laminate, timber or solid surface. If it is only the splashback you are after, that has its own page: splashbacks for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.

Care afterwards is simple. Wipe the tiles down with a damp cloth, and reseal grout and natural stone as the sealer's maker recommends, usually yearly. Natural stone needs a sealant made for that stone.

Laundry tiling

A laundry takes water, heat, detergent and dropped objects, so the tiling has to be genuinely durable rather than merely attractive. Tiling a laundry turns a worn, back-of-house room into one that is easy to clean and adds to the value of the house. If you are changing the whole room rather than just the surfaces, see laundry renovations.

Custom tiling

Custom work covers the jobs that are not a rectangle of standard tile: mosaic designs, hand-painted tiles, feature walls, patterned floors, and outdoor areas as well as indoor ones. You choose the colours, the sealers and the finishes, and we set out the pattern so the cuts land where nobody is looking. It runs from a small kitchen splashback to a large-scale floor.

Commercial tiling

If you run a business in Canberra, the floor and the walls are the first impression a customer forms before anyone speaks to them. We tile offices, amenities and retail spaces - floors, walls and countertops - and specify for the traffic the space gets rather than for a showroom. You bring the look you want in colour, size, texture and type; we tell you which of those will still look right after that traffic has been over it.

Tile replacement

Chipped, damaged and broken tiles are worth dealing with early, because a cracked tile in a wet area is a waterproofing problem waiting to happen. Gluing tiles is an option, but it is risky and it often fails.

We replace tiles no matter how bad the damage. The hard part is rarely the work: it is finding a tile that matches the undamaged sections of an existing floor, across classic ceramics, natural stone and mosaic. We will tell you straight away whether a match is realistic or whether the floor is better done as a whole. Our guide to choosing tiles and materials covers the options if you are starting again.

Frequently asked questions

Ceramic or porcelain - which should I use?
Both are water-resistant and durable, and both suit a bathroom. Ceramic is the cheaper of the two. Porcelain is harder and stands up better in bathrooms, kitchens and anywhere with heavy foot traffic.
How long does tiling take?
A small area such as a kitchen splashback can be a day. An average bathroom is a few days. A whole house or a commercial job is closer to five days, and a complex set-out or a large-format tile adds to it.
Can you tile a room someone else has demolished?
Yes. We tile rooms another trade has stripped as well as rooms we strip ourselves. Before we quote we check the substrate is sound, level and dry, and in a wet area we confirm the waterproofing is in place and certified, because nothing laid over a bad surface stays good.
Do you take on small tiling jobs, or only whole rooms?
Both. One splashback, one wall, a laundry floor or a whole-house floor are all work we take. The measure and the written quote are free either way, and the quote is itemised before you commit.
Is there a warranty on tiling?
Yes. Every job comes with a 10-year warranty on our workmanship, waterproofing included. The warranty paperwork comes to you in the handover pack.
