Waterproofing Certificate Canberra

Every wet area we waterproof for Canberra homeowners is done to AS3740:2021, and the waterproofing certificate is handed to you at handover, with the warranty paperwork and the care instructions.

A waterproofing certificate is the paper that says the membrane under your tiles was inspected before the tiles went on. Once a bathroom is finished, nobody can see the membrane again, so the certificate is the record that it was done properly. Keep it: it is the document that proves the wet area was built to AS3740:2021.

Why it matters

  • Selling the house. If you sell, it is the document that proves the room was done properly, and a buyer can ask to see it.
  • An insurance claim. If water damage ever turns into a claim, the certificate is the record of how the wet area was waterproofed.
  • Strata. In a unit or a townhouse, a leak does not stop at your floor, and the owners corporation may ask how a bathroom above or beside another home was waterproofed.

How the certificate comes about

  1. The substrate is prepared and moisture-tested, with a bond breaker in the junctions and around the penetrations so the membrane can move with the building.
  2. The membrane goes on in coats, each one cured fully before the next, to AS3740:2021.
  3. A licensed waterproofer inspects the membrane and issues the compliance certificate. No tiling starts until it is in hand.
  4. The room is tiled and fitted off over a membrane that has been checked, not assumed.
  5. The certificate is yours at handover, in the handover pack with the warranty paperwork and the care instructions.

The heights and the cure times the standard sets are in our guide to waterproofing and ventilation.

What to keep, and what to ask

  • Keep it with the house papers, beside the warranty paperwork. Every job comes with a 10-year warranty on our workmanship, waterproofing included.
  • Ask before you sign. Whoever does your bathroom, ask who issues the certificate and when you will receive it. Our guide to choosing a bathroom renovator has the other questions worth asking.

When this is not what you need

If your bathroom was tiled years ago and nobody can find its certificate, a new piece of paper is not the fix. The membrane is under the tiles, and a certificate comes from inspecting it before they go on. If the room shows the signs of a failed membrane, such as peeling paint, a musty smell, water stains or visible mould, the job is waterproofing, and a new certificate comes with that work.
