How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Take? A Canberra Timeline

Week-by-week bathroom renovation timeline diagram — Apex Bathroom Renovations ACT Canberra

A standard bathroom renovation in Canberra takes 2–4 weeks from demolition to completion. Complex projects involving plumbing relocation, layout changes, or custom joinery take 4–6 weeks.

Here is an honest week-by-week breakdown of what happens and why each phase takes as long as it does.

Why Renovation Timelines Cannot Be Rushed

Before getting into the timeline, one important fact: the biggest variable in any bathroom renovation is not the tiling or the fixture installation — it is the waterproofing cure time. Under AS3740:2021, liquid-applied waterproofing membranes must be applied in multiple coats with full cure time between each coat and before tiling begins. This typically means 24–48 hours minimum per cure cycle in normal Canberra temperatures — and longer in winter.

Any renovator who promises to demolish, waterproof, and tile a bathroom in three or four days is cutting corners on the cure time. This is one of the most common causes of waterproofing failure in Canberra bathrooms, and it is entirely invisible once tiles are laid.

At Apex Bathrooms ACT, we build cure time into every project schedule as non-negotiable.

Week 1 — Demolition and Substrate Preparation

Duration: 2–3 days

The first week begins with protecting the areas of your home adjacent to the bathroom — floors, doorways, and walls — before demolition starts. We then remove:

  • All existing tiles (floor and walls) — carefully to avoid damage to adjacent surfaces
  • Existing vanity, toilet suite, shower screen, and tapware
  • Old waterproofing membrane
  • Any wall sheeting or substrate that is damaged, non-compliant, or unsuitable for the new installation

Once demolition is complete, the substrate is inspected carefully. This is the most important inspection in the entire project. Hidden water damage — rotted subfloor, compromised plaster, non-compliant old waterproofing that has been failing silently for years — is revealed here.

In Canberra’s older housing stock, particularly homes built in the 1970s and 1980s in Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Woden, and Inner North, this is a common finding.

Any substrate issues are documented, discussed with you, and addressed before waterproofing begins. This is also when moisture testing of the substrate is performed — a mandatory step before membrane application under AS3740:2021.

The week concludes with the substrate prepared, levelled, and ready for waterproofing.

Week 2 — Waterproofing and Plumbing Rough-In

Duration: 3–4 days (including mandatory cure time)

Waterproofing is the most time-sensitive phase of the renovation — not because it takes long to apply, but because the membrane must be applied in multiple coats and each coat must cure fully before the next is applied, and the final coat must cure fully before tiling begins.

Our waterproofing process follows AS3740:2021 requirements exactly:

  • Bond breaker application at all wall/floor junctions and penetrations
  • First liquid membrane coat — shower walls to minimum 1,800mm, full shower floor with graded application to drain
  • First coat cure: 24 hours minimum (longer in cold Canberra winters)
  • Second liquid membrane coat — full coverage over the first
  • Second coat cure: 24–48 hours before tiling

While the membrane is curing, the licensed plumber completes the plumbing rough-in — new shower mixer body, waste fitting, tap bodies, and any other plumbing connections that need to be in place before tiling. These penetrations are then waterproofed and sealed as part of the membrane process.

At the end of Week 2, a licensed waterproofer inspects the finished membrane and issues the waterproofing compliance certificate. Tiling does not begin until this certificate is in hand.

Week 3 — Tiling

Duration: 3–5 days depending on bathroom size and tile selection

Tiling begins after the waterproofing compliance certificate is issued and the membrane has fully cured. The tiling phase covers:

Day 1–2: Floor and wall tile installation. Tiles are set out before any are fixed — we confirm the starting point, set-out lines, and cut positions to achieve the best visual result and avoid small cuts at visible edges.

Day 3: Grout and cuts. Once adhesive has cured, grout is applied to all joints. Cut tiles at penetrations, edges, and niches are completed and installed.

Day 4–5: Silicone sealing. Movement joints — all changes of plane, internal corners in the shower, and the junction between the tiled walls and floor — are sealed with flexible silicone. This is a separate trade step from grouting and is not done on the same day.

Larger format tiles (600×1200mm or 800×1600mm) and complex tile patterns add time to this phase. A feature wall with a different tile format, a herringbone pattern, or a niche insert all require additional set-out and cutting time.

Week 4 — Fixtures, Fit-Out, and Handover

Duration: 2–3 days

The final week brings the bathroom together:

Plumbing completion. The plumber connects all fixtures — shower mixer, tapware, toilet suite, vanity basin. Hot and cold water connections are made and tested for leaks.

Electrical. The electrician installs or replaces the exhaust fan, installs new lighting, connects the heated towel rail, and completes any underfloor heating wiring where applicable.

Vanity and cabinetry installation. The vanity unit and mirror are installed, silicone-sealed at the wall, and connected to the plumbing.

Shower screen installation. The frameless or semi-frameless shower screen is installed by a glazier. For fully frameless screens, this is typically done after tiling is complete to allow precise measurement.

Final snagging. We conduct a detailed inspection of the finished bathroom — checking grout lines, silicone joints, fixture operation, screen alignment, and tile finish. Any items identified are addressed before handover.

Handover. We complete a final walkthrough with you, confirm your satisfaction with every element, and provide:

  • Waterproofing compliance certificate
  • 10-year installation warranty documentation
  • Product warranties for all fixtures
  • Care instructions for tiles, grout, and silicone

What Extends the Timeline?

Most projects run to the schedule above. The following add time:

Plumbing relocation. Moving a toilet, shower, or vanity to a new position requires concrete cutting (for slab-on-ground homes) and new drainage runs. This adds 2–4 days depending on scope.

Custom joinery. Bespoke vanity cabinetry has a lead time of 2–4 weeks from order. For projects with custom joinery, we order early — the vanity arrives after the tiling is complete, so there is no project delay if the order is placed at the right time.

Hidden substrate damage. If demolition reveals significant water damage or a rotted subfloor, structural repairs add 1–3 days before waterproofing can begin.

Complex tile patterns. Herringbone, chevron, or intricate feature tile layouts require more set-out time and more careful cutting — add 1–2 days to the tiling phase.

Canberra winters. Cold temperatures extend waterproofing membrane cure times. We build additional cure time into project schedules between April and September to account for this.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bathroom Renovation Timeline Canberra

How long does a bathroom renovation take in Canberra?

A standard bathroom renovation in Canberra takes 2–4 weeks from demolition to completion. Week one covers demolition and substrate preparation. Week two covers waterproofing and plumbing rough-in. Week three covers tiling, grouting, and sealing. Week four covers fixture installation, electrical, and final handover. Complex projects involving plumbing relocation or custom joinery take 4–6 weeks.

Why does waterproofing take so long?

Waterproofing under AS3740:2021 requires liquid-applied membrane in multiple coats with full cure time between each coat. Most membranes require 24–48 hours per cure cycle at normal temperatures — and longer in Canberra’s cold winters. Tiling cannot begin until the final coat has fully cured and a licensed waterproofer has issued a compliance certificate. This is a legal requirement, not a choice. Renovators who promise very fast turnarounds are typically not observing proper cure times.

Can I stay in my home during a bathroom renovation in Canberra?

Yes, in most cases. If you have a second bathroom, you can use it throughout the renovation. If you only have one bathroom, you will need alternative arrangements for approximately 2 weeks — the period between demolition and when the new fixtures are operational. We can discuss timing to minimise this inconvenience during the planning stage.

What time of year is best for a bathroom renovation in Canberra?

Spring and early summer (September to December) tend to be ideal. Waterproofing membrane cures fastest in warm, dry conditions — Canberra’s autumn and winter can significantly extend cure times and add days to the project schedule. That said, we complete renovations year-round and build seasonal cure time into our winter project schedules.

How far in advance should I book a bathroom renovation in Canberra?

For a standard bathroom renovation, book 6–10 weeks in advance to secure your preferred start date. Quality renovation contractors in Canberra are typically booked 4–8 weeks out. For projects beginning in the busy spring season (September–November), booking 10–12 weeks in advance is advisable. Contact us on 0450 548 879 to check current availability.
